An anonymous "slap in the face" has a much greater effect than directly talking to an alcoholic. They can't lash back to substantiate or perpetuate their denial. Pictures really stick in ones subconscious mind. And as with memory training techniques, seemingly silly images stick in ones mind the best.

We aren't initially trying to get a person to stop drinking, but rather to heighten their awareness of themselves and their actions when they are drinking, and even as they contemplate drinking.

The resultant behavioral improvement is a giant step toward ones learning to drink sensibly, and in many cases steering one into seeking professional help or group support.

Remember:

You are trying to help someone.

They will really appreciate your action
once it begins working.

It's a dose of very effective TOUGH LOVE.

Ever heard of or seen the Scope commercial where there is a doorbell ring?

When the person answers the door there is only a bottle of Scope on the porch.

Wondering who is trying to tell you something, but is afraid to do it, is a shocking eye-opener.

Psychologically, it causes many things to happen in ones mind.   The bottom line is that they will begin imagining what others might be thinking about them when they are smoking.

They will always wonder who is watching them and what thoughts are going on in their head.

They will begin feeling self-conscious when they light a cigarette in public (OR IN YOUR HOUSE!).

They will begin sliding the cigarette back into the pack and waiting until later.   (You will catch them doing this!)

It's sad that SHAME motivates more than knowledge and common sense, but since it does, and we know it, it's a shame to let people go on killing themselves just because we don't want to hurt their feelings.
Think about it.

Just remember one thing:   You are trying to help someone, and they will really, really appreciate your action once it begins working.

A healthy friend is much better
than a dead one.
